What are the most important leadership skills to develop for new managers in analytical roles?
Trust! The most important thing a leader should do is to build a culture of trust, where staff can feel safe to make mistakes, opine freely, and to take initiative. But, to build a culture of trust, it has to start with the manager. She should first trust her staff and exercise this by empowering them to take initiatives and to opine, even when their views differ from hers. The leader should shoulder the downside and share the upside, if staff is to really feel trusted. Only then will they reciprocate with trusting their leader. In a culture of reciprocity of trust there would be no reason for bonus or incentive pay nor for monitoring. Trust guarantees efficiency and equity are always present and practiced by all.

What are the most important conferences for financial economists to attend?
These days, the most important conferences to attend, as a financial economist, are the ones that are interdisciplinary, where we engage with others with different perspectives so we can all learn from each other. What we should avoid is preaching to the converts and give high fives to each other, while those outside the venue couldn’t care less about what we say to each other! We need to bring down the silos. For example, financial economists should attend climate and nature conferences and help figure out how to help build new nature markets that are nature and people positive!
