We are delighted to have the support of conservationist and renowned philanthropist Ted Turner, founder of CNN (Cable News Network) and America’s second-largest landowner. He has restored, and is protecting with conservation easements, the majority of his 2 million acres. Ted has also dedicated himself to restoring the American Bison in the US, once hunted down from 30m to 200. He now has 60,000 head roaming his land.
As a philanthropist, he is best known for his $1 billion gift to support the United Nations, establishing the United Nations Foundation, a public charity that broadens U.S. support for the UN. Ted serves as Chairman of the UNF and also co- chairs the Nuclear Threat Initiative, which he also founded to prevent the proliferation of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. His family foundation has generously supported environment-related initiatives as well.
Ted won the America’s Cup in 1977. Having sailed over 50,000 miles at sea he has a profound respect for the Oceans and is a member of the Ocean Elders. Ted shares our deep concerns about the far-reaching risks associated with not acting fast enough or at scale on the Climate Crisis, and for protecting the global climate systems of our planet’s Global Commons.

She is Explorer in Residence at the National Geographic Society and an Ocean Elder. Among her many honorary doctorates and international awards she was honoured by Time Magazine as its first Hero for the Planet in 1998, by UNEP as Champion of the Earth 2014 and elected Glamour Magazine’s 2014 Woman of the Year being the first woman Chief Scientist at NOAA. Sylvia has led more than a hundred expeditions researching marine ecosystems.
Her life is featured in Mission Blue an Emmy® award-winning Netflix documentary and at 85 she continues to speak out for the protection of the oceans. In May 2020 Sylvia shared an online dialogue about Deep Seabed Mining with one of our Arctic Angels. We are honoured to count Sylvia as an Advisor.
