Why this petition matters

Started by Harriet Hadfield

The Wightlink FastCat service is a vital connection between the Isle of Wight and the mainland for commuters, residents and tourists.

Many things have returned to ‘normal’ since the covid pandemic - with the exception of some cross-Solent ferry timetabling.

There is a particular need for later crossings on the FastCat to be reinstated. Currently, the last crossing from the mainland is the 8:20pm departure - with check-in required just after 8pm to guarantee your ticket.

This means, for example, an Islander who travels to London for a day needs to leave Waterloo Station on the 6pm train to catch the last FastCat crossing.

Any later and the only option is to wait for the 10:15pm car ferry sailing - which has many drawbacks: a much longer crossing time; an unsafe walk at night through Portsmouth from the train station; and a different port of arrival to where you left the Island in the morning.

Our ask is simple: later evening sailings on the FastCat – in both directions. There should be up to three later sailings, including at least one after 10pm, every day of the week. These should be timed to align with trains arriving in Portsmouth Harbour station.

Later crossings from Ryde Pier Head would also provide flexibility for those working later on the Island.

Wightlink says it is currently monitoring demand, so please use the comments section to state your reasons or anecdotes for when you need the service. Perhaps you've travelled on the RedJet later at night and seen how much busier it is? Or, like me, crossed on the 2215 Wightlink car ferry with dozens of fellow foot passengers? Let’s keep it positive and encouraging please, as I truly believe we are more likely to make a difference that way.

Please support the Isle of Wight by adding your name to this petition calling for an important and achievable change.
